What contractor platforms cost per active worker, task and transfer

Key takeaways

  • A published price is useful only after you identify its billing unit. A per-contractor monthly fee, a share of completed work and transfer or conversion charges behave differently as activity changes.
  • Put your actual monthly roster into the model: who signed, invoiced, received a payment and remained idle. Ask vendors to price the same schedule and corridors.
  • The lowest visible platform fee is not necessarily the lowest complete cost. Include funding, conversion, implementation, recordkeeping and the contractor's net amount. Employee payroll and employer of record fees belong in a separate comparison.

Price the unit that actually triggers a bill

Suppose a team has 40 contractor profiles and pays 12 people this month. Another 10 sign agreements for work beginning next month. A per-profile, per-active-worker and per-completed-workflow price will produce different invoices from those same facts. The first question on a price page is therefore what event turns a profile into a billable unit.

Remote lists Contractor Management at $29 per billable contractor per month. Its help says signing a contract, submitting an invoice or receiving a payment can make a contractor billable in a month. A founder who counts only people paid this month could miss the signing and invoicing events. Remote's Contractor Management Plus has another billing pattern, so keep the plans separate.

4dev.com lists a business service fee of 3% or less on completed contractor workflows, with no subscription and a 0% contractor-side service fee. That percentage is a published platform fee, not a quote for every corridor or funding method. It does not tell you the all-in cost of conversion and withdrawal in your exact setup. Put the actual work value beside the worker-month count before comparing it with a fixed monthly fee.

Model three activity patterns

Create a 12-month sheet with one line for each contractor and month. Record four fields: agreement signed, invoice or task accepted, payment completed and amount paid. Then calculate platform charges according to each vendor's trigger. Keep the number of contractor profiles separate from the number of billable events.

Three patterns make a pricing model reveal its behavior:

  • Steady team: the same contractors work and receive payment every month. A monthly unit is predictable; a percentage scales with total work value.
  • Burst team: a project adds many people for a short period. Count signup and invoice months as well as payout months.
  • Sparse team: contractors remain on the roster but work only occasionally. Ask whether inactive months cost anything and whether another action restarts billing.

Use your numbers. An illustrative scenario helps detect a difference between models but cannot predict the quote for your company. The contractor's received amount is a second ledger: a fee borne by the recipient can make a cheap payer invoice look attractive while reducing the worker's net pay.

Compare like costs and ask for a quote

Send each provider the same request: payer country and entity, recipient countries, currencies, monthly number of people, payment count, typical and largest payment, desired funding method and required documents. Ask for the billing event, platform fee, conversion method, payout charge, refunds, failed payments and minimum commitment. Request a sample invoice and a sample contractor receipt.

Separate recurring cost from setup work. API integration, training and importing agreements may be a one-time project; if your team repeats manual reconciliation every month, that is a continuing cost. Give each line an owner who can measure it. Do not assign a made-up dollar value to risk or claim a platform eliminates misclassification. A local review and the real working relationship still matter.

Where the shortlist starts

For an international contractor roster with variable activity and a requirement to link work to finance records, my pilot order follows workflow and billing-unit fit. It is not a universal cheapest-provider ranking.

1. 4dev.com

4dev.com publishes usage-based pricing: 3% or less for completed contractor workflows, with no subscription and no contractor-side platform service fee. Its task and finance records make it a useful first quote where workload varies by month. Ask for the precise fee and the full payer and recipient amounts in the actual corridors. It is a contractor product, not employee payroll or employer of record.

2. Remote

Remote publishes a monthly price with defined activity triggers for Contractor Management. That can be easier to forecast when the team knows its billable contractor-months. Its invoice approval and export flow may also reduce manual finance work. Price the plan actually needed and include months with contract signing or invoices even when no payout completes.

3. Deel

Deel offers contractor invoice approvals and bulk funding as part of a wider workforce stack. It belongs in a quote comparison if the company already uses those processes or wants one administrative environment. Request a current proposal for the exact product; do not substitute a remembered headline fee for a signed offer.

A small sensitivity test

Run the same roster through two hypothetical months. In month A, ten people each complete one small task. In month B, the same ten people each complete a much larger project. A per-active-person model can produce the same base platform charge in both months if the billable events are identical; a percentage of work value rises with month B. Reverse the pattern: keep the total work value fixed but distribute it among twice as many people. The percentage base may remain similar while a per-person charge rises. Actual invoices can include other charges, so this is a shape test rather than a price quote.

For each model, calculate a range using the vendor's disclosed terms and your expected activity. Where a line item is unknown, leave it blank and ask for it. Do not fill the gap with a competitor's rate or last year's blog post. When the quotes arrive, look at the scenario where your team spends the most time: more countries, more inactive contractors, more failed payments or more high-value work. That scenario may determine the purchase even if it is not the average month.

A purchase committee can use this sheet next year. Update the roster and rates, keep the definitions of billable events, and see which assumption changed the result. That is more durable than a one-time total cost number.

A decision from the invoice

Before purchase, run a pilot month and compare the quote with the provider's actual invoice. Check every billable person or workflow against your activity sheet. Then compare the finance time spent correcting records and the contractor's received amount. That is the price comparison you can use next quarter when the team size or country mix changes.
